Monastrell, also known as Mourvedre in France and sometime the U.S., does very well in the Valencia region along the Mediterranean in eastern Spain where it originated. If you enjoy Cabernet Sauvignon, Monastrell is a good choice for you to add a little variety as it is also full-bodied and aromatic. Translated as either "cool", or sometimes more in the direction of a rowdy, wine-soaked party that Bacchus would have enjoyed, this wine could have fit right in and paired with savory short ribs or grill-charred sausages.
A nose of dark fruit, violets and a little pepper is followed by fruit flavors of plum, blueberry, and blackberry with a relatively long finish. Just plain yummy and considered a very under-valued variety by most wine lovers.
